Coaching, mentorship, skill development, networking, and career planning are frequently included in this support. The organization's HR business partners or managers, as well as HR services like learning and development, talent management, or recruiting, frequently support career development (Gartner, 2023).

Career development process

Making a decision about a major or a career path might be challenging. But the more we comprehend the procedure, the more power we have over how to handle our professional lives. Four key recurrent phases make up the continuing process of career development:

·         Self-knowledge

Understanding our personality, interests, abilities, and values is the first step in developing self-knowledge, which is defined as knowing oneself. It is important to be able to explain these solutions properly and to comprehend how the four components relate to one another and to occupations.

·         Exploration

The process of identifying career and employment possibilities that suit your interests and talents, as well as examining the essential components of the job search process, is known as "career exploration and planning."

·         Decision-making

Many people find the decision-making step difficult because they believe that choosing a career is an either-or situation: if we choose one vocation, then we automatically rule out all the others we are considering. And because it feels like such a big commitment, many people try to put off making the choice for as long as they can. "Knowledge is power," as many wise people have said, and the more familiar you are with different professions and the labor market, the more effective your ability to choose a job will be.

·         Action

Without action, the stages of gathering and interpreting information are of little use. The concept is to use SMART to attain objectives (Missouri State, 2023)

Importance of Career Development

Every employee in a company seeks professional advancement that is moving in the correct direction. Development is dependent on the career route a person chooses. A career should be organized so that it advances. Job development offers a framework of abilities, objectives, knowledge, performance, and evaluation that enables a person to advance in their job and meet their goals. Planning out a career carefully is usually beneficial for people to be successful professionally and also helps to increase employee enthusiasm in the workplace (MBA Skool, 2022).

 

How to build a purpose-driven career

Building a professional fit for purpose and contributing to a better world is necessary. However, building a purposeful career is not always an easy process to navigate. Here are some tips to build such a professional.

·         Get clear on your values

Create a personal mission statement to wrap up after determining your north star for life decisions. Aligning yourself with causes and businesses will be a lot simpler if you take the time to jot down your values and figure out what is actually important to you.

·         Figure out your purpose

Find out what will provide you with meaning and influence in your work if you want those things. Decide what you want to do in life, keeping your values as a guiding principle, and then pursue it (or, at the very least, experiment so you'll know in the long run). Understanding your values may also help you understand what gives you meaning in life.

·         Find that matching company

It is customary for businesses to present their beliefs on their website or through social media. Do your homework, read those "about us" pages, and identify the businesses that share your principles. Although careers in healthcare, education, public service, or non-profit organizations can all be fulfilling, the public sector is not the only place where one can hold a position of influence. There are numerous businesses functioning in the private sector that offer meaningful work.

·         Look in the right places

You may save a lot of time by searching for vacant openings on employment boards that vet employers before advertising them. Job platforms are reacting to this need for more meaningful work by only showcasing positions at businesses that meet their specific requirements. Before placing a firm on the platform, the female factor job platform evaluates it based on a points system that takes into account the company's rules, history, staff gender balance, and ratings on employee review websites.

 

·         Mention that purpose

Once you've identified a fit with a company, be sure to demonstrate your enthusiasm for their mission in both your application and during any subsequent interviews. Higher job satisfaction is a result of having a purpose that is in line with your employer's, benefiting both parties. Depending on the application procedure, you may either incorporate it into your CV by highlighting any prior work or activities that are relevant to the objective or submit it as part of an application form response (Rothwell, 2022).

Conclusion

Careers are shaped through the process of self-awareness, inquiry, and decision-making known as professional development. Career potential must be effectively navigated to select and practice careers that match a person's personality, skills, and interests. When someone is concerned about their job growth, they identify their own strengths and weaknesses and make significant efforts to strengthen their abilities. Additionally, it requires looking for opportunities to advance, learning about different roles and industries to find a match for their skills, and completely changing careers if they find a better fit.
